Why should you go for PMP®_Certification in 2017?

Image result for PMP take action now

If you are looking to appear for the PMP certification exam in 2017, then you are highly recommended to take action NOW:
(Read below for more info)

Although PMI has not made any declaration, but considering previous experience, it is presumed that the PMP® exam will be based on the current edition of PMBOK® Guide 5 throughout 2017. We can see the effects of the PMBOK Guide sixth edition on the PMP® exam in January 2018 onwards. PMP® aspirants who have started preparing for PMP® certification now will be able to get certified based on the current PMP® syllabus and PMBOK® Guide 5th version.
6 reasons for considering PMP® certification now:
  1. The PMBOK® Guide 5th edition (current edition) and the PMP® exam are common and you will get lots of study materials and resources readily available.
  2. It has been predicted that the exam fee for PMP® may see a hike in 2018.
  3. You may witness changes in the format of the PMP® exam.
  4. The difficulty level may be high after adapting to PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition
  5. The PMP® online courses and exam preparation books may not be available immediately to be released on the updated versions for PMP® exams.
  6. The new prep materials based on the new PMBOK® Guide 6th edition will be expected to have lots of errors in terminology and project management processes.
Hence, if you don’t get PMP® certified in 2017, there are chances that you cannot get PMP® certified in the first or even second quarter of 2018, which may affect your career plan.

Benefits of getting PMP certified within this year

If you would like to get your PMP® Certification this year (2017), we suggest you to take action NOW as a kind of risk management:

Across the globe, thousands of PMP® Certification Aspirants begin their exam prep journey in the hope of getting PMP® Certified (in their first attempt, hopefully!!!). This year is certainly no exception. However, 2017 is also very different.

The current edition of the PMBOK® guide and the PMP® exam are very familiar and PMP® certification aspirants can find study resources/materials readily available. (Read - no changes to the PMP® exam this year, 2017). As the PMBOK® guide is not changing until the 3rd quarter of the year and the PMP® Exam will be based on the current PMBOK® guide 5th edition until 1st quarter of 2018. This means, there is still time to study and prepare for your PMP® Exam based on the existing PMP® exam.

1)   Format of the PMP® Exam could change and the PMP® Exam fee MAY see a hike in 2018.
2)   The PMP® Exam may get tougher as there are quite a few complaints that the quality of PMP® holders is decreasing over the previous years, as getting PMP® Certified is becoming easier
3)   Publishers of the PMP® online courses and PMP® Exam Prep books may not be ready to release the updated versions of their PMP® resources with the introduction of the new PMP® Exam (this happened in 2016 when PMI updated the PMP® Exam Content Outline and the new PMP® Exam was forced to defer)
4)   Some PMP® study resources/materials highly recommended earlier, may not live up to expectations of the new PMP® Exam as the depth of their understanding of the new PMP® Exam may not be the same as before (owing to change of the authors/editors, etc.)
5)   Major PMP® Exam prep books will take time to get published — if you would like to get PMP® certified in the first quarter of 2018, you may not be able to find a book for your exam study and you would be forced to delay getting PMP® certified for 3 months or more
6)   The PMP® Exam results for the first few weeks after the introduction of the new PMP® Exam may not be released immediately after the submission of the exam paper answers, as PMI needs to adjust the passing marks.

For the new PMP® Exam version, all the PMP® Exam prep books, mock exams and online training course will see a price increase for sure (maybe over 15% or more), it is not known if the PMP® Exam fee will also see a hike — if you begin now, you can lock in the current price level without worrying about requiring to spend more for the same PMP® title

Talking about the push factors:

Lots of tried and tested exam preparation materials (based on PMBOK® Guide 5) are around now, with many available for FREE. It really takes time to build up such a wealth of resource for the new PMP® Exam version

According to many PMP® aspirants, it usually takes around 2 to 3 months to complete the PMP® Exam preparation. If you begin now, you will almost certainly get PMP® certified in 2017

Don’t worry and take action NOW, if you are qualified for the experience requirements, why not get the required 35 contact hours of project management education right away? (As a bonus, the 35 contact hours are VALID FOREVER — meaning that you will not be required to take another project management course even if the PMP® Exam has changed). Your very first step of PMP® Journey is to take a PMP® online/onsite course

The conclusion is: if you don’t get PMP® certified in 2017, it is highly likely that you cannot get PMP® Certified in the first or even second quarter of 2018 — your career plan may be adversely affected.

According to the experiences of many PMP® Certification Aspirants, the average duration of PMP® study is around 2 months (between 1 – 3 months for most of us). Our suggestion to PMP® Certification Aspirants in 2017 is:

If you can devote at least 2 hours of daily study continuously for 2 months, you are highly advised to begin your PMP® Certification journey before September 2017 as there is still plenty of time for you to succeed!

Is September 2017 a bit too late? I would consider the time to be quite enough. If given the chance for my own PMP®, I would rather begin to prepare for my exam at the beginning of the year rather than have to wait several months. You know the psychological burden.

However, if you are quite uncertain about your time (I have personally known someone who took over 2 years to complete their PMP® Certification owing to sudden surge in workload from their daily jobs and personal emergencies), you may better have to wait for the new PMP® Exam which is based on the PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition.

If it is already October 2017, then it is more prudent to wait; otherwise the money spent on PMP® Exam prep courses or exam prep books would be wasted when the new Exam becomes effective.

If you are taking your exam before January 1, 2018, you should continue to study from and prepare for your examination using the Fifth Edition of the PMBOK® Guide along with the examination content outline PMI makes available. If you are taking your exam after January 1, 2018, the PMP® Exam will be changed and you should plan to study from and prepare for your examination using the Sixth Edition of the PMBOK® Guide.

PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition to be released?

According to PMI® the Final Release is scheduled for the 3rd quarter of 2017 (Jun-Aug 2017)

When will the PMP® Exam expected to change?

The PMP® Exam is largely based on the content found in the PMBOK® Guide. The exam changeover from version 5 to 6 is scheduled as follows:

PMP Exam update to PMBOK® Guide 6 will happen in Q1 of 2018 (could as early as January 2018)

Major changes that will happen?

1)      There will be 49 processes from 47.
2)      Three new processes will be added and one process will be deleted.

New processes:

"Manage Project Knowledge"
"Control Resources"
"Implement Risk Responses"

Deleted process:

Close Procurements process has been removed. Its functionality has been consolidated into the

"Close Project or Phase” Process

3)      Two Knowledge Areas will be renamed:

From Project Human Resource Management to "Project Resource Management"
From Project Time Management to "Project Schedule Management"

4)      Some Processes will be renamed:

From Perform Quality Assurance to "Manage Quality"
From Plan Human Resource Management to "Plan Resource Management"
From Acquire Project Team to "Acquire Resources"
From Control Communications to "Monitor Communications"
From Control Risks to “Monitor Risks“
From Plan Stakeholder Management to "Plan Stakeholder Engagement"
From Control Stakeholder Engagement to "Monitor Stakeholder Engagement"

5)      Chapters Re-alignment

There will be chapter’s re-alignment in Front End (Chapters 1 to 3). The information in Chapter 1 to 3 will be combined into 2 chapters and a new Chapter 3 will be devoted to “The Role of the Project Manager” where many aspects of the Project Manager’s role will be specifically mapped to the PMI Talent Triangle.

6)      There will be Process Tailoring which means analyzing the project to determine how much emphasis to put on each process (based on the scope & size of the project).

7)      There will be various notations throughout the new PMBOK® Guide differentiating between processes which are “Ongoing” (continuously executing) vs. "Non-ongoing processes.” This concept will be emphasized for the first time in new PMBOK® Guide Sixth Edition.

8)      The Project Scope vs Product Scope concept will also be emphasized for the first time in new PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition.

9)      The Earned Value tool kit supported by the PMBOK® Guide will now include “Earned Schedule Management".

10)  There will be distinction between "Communication" (as in communicating between two people) and "Communications" (artifacts, such as published emails).

11)  The new strategy, “Escalate Responses” provides for a PM escalating a risk to the appropriate party so that the risk is no longer his/her responsibility. Once escalated, the PM will now have the option of either:

A) Removing the risk from the project’s risk register if desired, or
B) Keeping it in the risk register, but classifying it as “Escalated/Assigned To.”

12)  The new Lessons Learned Register is now part of the set of ITTOs. Project Managers will now be encouraged to update on a frequent basis (not just at the end of the project). Updates can be done at any time throughout the project, especially at the end of project phases (similar to the “Retrospective” in Agile).

13)  The PMBOK® Guide itself is taking on more of a voluntary instead of mandatory tone in some areas. For instance, for Requirements Collection, they might now say something to the effect that, “Here is a list of possible choices of tools. Choose any of these that best might fit your current project.”

14)  ITTO Bundling

There will be simplification of Inputs and Outputs in ITTO table. Tools & Techniques will be grouped under common headings.

15)  New Appendix Information

Summary of Key Concepts
Summary of Tailoring Considerations
Summary of Tools & Techniques
Adaptive & Iterative Approaches

Which version of the GUIDE should I use to study?

That's easy:
Are you taking your exam before Jan 1, 2018? Use PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition.
Are you taking your exam after Jan 1, 2018? Use PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition.

Please note that the above recommendation is based on the expectation that the PMP® exam will probably change to the new standard in January of 2018. We will update this recommendation once more data becomes available. But in the meantime you should plan on passing your PMP exam in 2017, so that you can take it based on PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition.

Personality plays a big role in the types of job/s one is best suited for. A new research from CareerBuilder and Emsi found that "PERSUADERS" - employees who are confident, outgoing and comfortable with risky situations – are usually found in business-oriented careers.
